UNC Football senior Chazz Surratt earns another preseason honor as he appears on another award watch list

Another week and another preseason honor for UNC Football linebacker Chazz Surratt as he heads into his senior year.

The former quarterback converted to linebacker last offseason, spending his junior year as a starter for the Tar Heels and was very impressive. Now, as he heads into this upcoming season, Surratt finds himself on a few different preseason award watch lists.

On Monday, Surratt was named to the Butkus Award preseason watch list which honors the top linebacker in college football. A day later, he was named to the Nagurski Trophy preseason watch list.

The Nagurski Award honors the National Defensive Player of the Year each college football season. Surratt was one of 98 players named to the preseason award watch list and is in some pretty good company among the top players in the country.

Surratt broke out onto the scene last season at linebacker, recording 115 total tackles, 15.0 TFL, 6.5 sacks and 10 QB hurries. His 115 total tackles were second-most in the Atlantic Coast Conference and he finished runner-up for the defensive player of the year in the conference.

And that was just in his first year at linebacker.

Going into this season, Surratt is expected to be even better in his senior year as he has some more knowledge of the system. The Denver, North Carolina native elected to return for one more year after having the chance to declare for the 2020 NFL Draft. Now, he’s looking at the opportunity to raise his draft stock even more with some outlets having him projected as high as a second-rounder.
