UNC Basketball: Recruiting analyst’s high praise for 5-star UNC target
5-star UNC basketball target lauded by national recruiting analyst
With better than two-dozen scholarship offers from many of the nation’s top college basketball programs, Hunter Sallis has become one of the most sought-after prospects in the class of 2021. Among the teams targeting Sallis to fill a position on next year’s squad are Auburn, Creighton, Florida, Florida State, Gonzaga, Kansas, Louisville, Memphis, Marquette, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas Tech and UCLA.
A 6-foot-3, 165-pound point guard at Millard North High School in Omaha, Nebraska, Sallis is a shifty, athletic guard with good ball-handling skills and a nice crossover. He’s got a quick first step, and gets to the goal with speed and efficiency. He drives the lane well in traffic and through contact, and can easily finish above the rim. He scores at all three levels, rebounds well for his position and plays pesky, tenacious defense. With that in mind, it’s not difficult to understand why so many high major programs want to get a commitment from the rising senior.
Rivals national recruiting analyst Corey Evans had similar things to say of Sallis this past weekend after watching him play for the first time this summer.
"“First time watching top-10 guard Hunter Sallis this summer,” Evans tweeted out on Saturday afternoon. “Talent is something else. Hasn’t stopped growing, longer, much improved three-level scorer and still a capable playmaker. All the traits of a star at the next level and beyond.”"
His colleague, Eric Bossi, recently touched on the Sallis recruitment, naming North Carolina as the current team to beat for a commitment from the 5-star floor general.
"“There has been some behind-the-scenes speculation that North Carolina is a bit of dream school for Sallis, and word has it that Roy Williams made a big impression on him when he offered a scholarship,” Bossi said. “Current five-star freshman Caleb Love is a potential one-and-done player, but even if Love sticks around, the Heels need more ball-handlers, and Williams’ best teams through the years have featured interchangeable backcourt parts.”"
There’s no real indication at this point when Sallis plans to cut down his list, or make a final decision. It seems safe to assume, however, that North Carolina will likely be among the teams to make the final cut for Sallis. Currently ranked 19th among players in the 2021 class according to the 247Sports Composite, Sallis is second among players at his position, and the No. 1 recruit in the state of Nebraska.
