UNC Basketball: Tar Heels lone commit stands out at tournament
By Zack Pearson
The lone UNC Basketball commit for the 2021 recruiting class earned some national attention over the weekend at a tournament
There is actually some basketball being played right now in the United States as Big Shots hosted their third tournament in the past few weeks in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. And one UNC Basketball commit had an impressive showing.
The third Big Shots Nationals took place last weekend in Myrtle Beach despite COVID-19 concerns in the state of South Carolina. Over a dozen teams took part in the tournament including Tea Marie Hoops which has 2021 UNC Basketball commit Dontrez Styles on the roster.
Styles was impressive in the tournament and even caught some national attention during Tea Marie Hoops’ win over B. Maze Elite. In the win on Saturday, Styles had 24 points to lead his team and national recruiting analyst Paul Biancardi of ESPN tweeted about his performance:
Styles and his team went on to finish group play at 2-1 with their lone loss coming Friday to Team Curry UAA by 78-76. The forward struggled in that first game, scoring just 9 points but did rebound for the 24-point game on Saturday.
In their final game, Styles only scored 10 points in the win but his overall play was impressive.
As it stands now, Styles is ranked as the No. 53 overall recruit, No. 1 in the state of North Carolina and No. 12 at his position by 247 Sports. He’s displayed the ability to be a solid knock down shooter, something the Tar Heels need him to bring at the next level.
Class of 2022 UNC target, D’Marco Dunn participated in the Big Shots tournament a few weeks back as well.
