UNC Football: Tar Heels get commitment from 3-star linebacker
The UNC football program gets its 18th commitment in the class of 2021, thanks to a pledge from 3-star linebacker Trevion Stevenson.
After committing to the Pittsburgh Panthers in late April, class of 2021 outside linebacker Trevion Stevenson decided to withdraw his pledge from the program on Thursday. Two days later, Stevenson announced his intent to accept a scholarship from Mack Brown and the North Carolina Tar Heels. He chose North Carolina over a number of other big-name programs, including Florida State, Louisville, Miami, Nebraska, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas and UCLA.
"“Everything like they make me feel very welcome and it feels like home,” Stevenson told Tar Heel Illustrated. “I’ve been talking to Coach Bly for four years. He’s been coming into the school since I was in ninth grade to see me. He has seen me improve and grow over the years. The same for Coach (Jay) Bateman. They all have a great plan and vision for me.”"
According to THI, Stevenson has known UNC defensive assistant coach Dre Bly for a few years, and that relationship was instrumental in the 3-star prospect’s decommitment from Pittsburgh, and subsequent commitment to North Carolina. A 6-foot-5, 217-pound senior from Phoebus High School in Hampton, Virginia, Stevenson is also said to be a big fan of current UNC wide receiver Dazz Newsome, who was a standout at Hampton High School.
Since 5-star cornerback and UNC commit Tony Grimes is reclassifying to the 2020 class, Stevenson is effectively the Tar Heels’ 17th member of the 2021 class. He’s ranked 1,535th in the class according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s No. 84 among players at his position, and 46th in the state of Virginia.
