UNC Football: No positive tests so far for players on campus

The UNC Football program hasn’t reported any positive tests for players on campus since their return in June, which is a good sign.

The University of North Carolina began their plan for athletes to return to campus in June starting with the football program. Players, staff members, coaches and faculty returned to campus in waves and practiced social distancing in hopes of getting a full 2020 college football season.

Upon arrival, everyone was tested for COVID-19 which is standard protocol across the country for all programs. But while many programs have seen positive tests, it appears as if the Tar Heels have yet to have one or at least be reported to the public.

Director of high school relations Kevin Donnalley appeared on WFNZ’s “The Clubhouse” podcast with Kyle Bailey to talk about his football career and new job at North Carolina after being hired in March.

During the interview, Donnalley revealed that he’s confident in a football season happening and revealed that the Tar Heels have had no positive tests so far. Here is the quote from Anthony Pagnotta of Heel Tough Blog:

"“I’m real confident. I think it’s going to look different in different parts of the country for different programs and at different levels,” Donnalley told Bailey. “There are programs that are handling this thing absolutely right. You can look in our backyard with UNC-Charlotte, they are doing a fantastic job with bringing their guys back in and no positive tests.”"

The interview is a good one and took place last week but since then, there haven’t been reports of any positive tests. The basketball programs even returned to campus over the weekend and were also tested.

However, those results are not back yet so it’s something to keep an eye on.

While the state of the 2020 college football season remains in doubt, at least the Tar Heels are taking precaution and are doing their part to keep the hope for a season alive.
