UNC Football: Drake Maye rebounds with big Day 2 at Elite 11 camp
By Zack Pearson
UNC Football commit Drake Maye is participating in the Elite 11 showcase down in Nashville this week and he had a big Day 2
The first two days of the Elite 11 football camp is officially in the books as the nation’s top quarterbacks are in Nashville to compete. The North Carolina Tar Heels’ were represented by 2021 four-star commit Drake Maye as he looks to put on a show down in the Music City.
Maye struggled in Monday’s session which featured a concept session as well as the rails shot challenge. But it didn’t take him long to rebound and put together an impressive performance in Day 2.
The quarterback was among the winners in Day 2’s pro day workout, giving all 20 quarterbacks 20 throws and grading each one. The quarterbacks would receive a score of 0-3 based on where the ball was placed with 0 being uncatchable and 3 right on the money.
Maye finished second in the drill with a score of 40, behind only Ohio State commit Kyle McCord who scored a 45 to lead the way.
The performance earned Maye some praise by recruiting analysts that were in attendance for the event. Andrew Ivins of 247 Sports wrote on Tuesday’s performances, including Maye’s. Here is what he had to say:
"After struggling Monday, Maye quickly turned things around on Tuesday. He put plenty of touch on his deep balls and showcased his velocity when asked to put some pace on balls over the middle. We have seen the Charlotte (NC) Myers Park signal caller turn it on in pressure situations before, so it shouldn’t be all that surprising that the Top247 signal caller posted a 40, which was good enough for the second-highest score of the night."
With the second-best finish on Day 2, Maye is now back in the Elite 11 leaderboard for the week:
There is one day left of competition as things will wrap up on Wednesday night. It’s the final chance for Maye to climb the rankings again and improve his stock to hopefully earn that fifth star eventually.
A good showing on Wednesday night could go a long ways for the Charlotte native and make UNC fans feel even more better about their future quarterback.
