The UNC football program has extended a scholarship offer to 4-star running back George Pettaway.

Mack Brown and the North Carolina football program are already working on one of the nation’s strongest backfields in the class of 2021, gaining early commitments from Kamarro Edmonds and Caleb Hood. That hasn’t stopped the second-year UNC head coach and his staff from getting a head start on the class of 2022, however, as they recently extended a scholarship offer to 4-star running back George Pettaway.

"“George was offered by Coach Bly and Coach Gillespie from UNC,” Pettaway’s head coach Mike Biehl told Ultimate Recruit. “They met as a staff this morning to review prospective running back film and based on what they saw, the staff felt that George has the type of talent and ability to help their program be successful.”"

Pettaway adds to a growing list of offers that includes Alabama, Florida, Maryland, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State, Texas A&M, Virginia and Virginia Tech. He’s holding 18 offers in total, and they’ll likely continue to pour in over the course of his junior season.

"“It’s exciting to get an offer from UNC,” Pettaway said. “I haven’t had the chance to visit yet, but I look forward to it. There are a lot of schools I’m going to want to visit when I’m finally able to.”"

A standout at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, Pettaway is a 5-foot-11, 180-pound rusher from Suffolk, Virginia. He’s not yet ranked by the 247Sports Composite due to the fact that he and his classmates are nearly two years from graduation. He is, however, ranked by the Top 247, which pegs him as the No. 36 overall recruit in the class of 2022. He’s the third-ranked running back in the class, and No. 3 in the state of Virginia.

Pettaway battled injuries through his first two seasons of high school ball, but still managed to average 13 yards per carry. He’s got patience to wait for his blockers to open up holes, speed to run through them and the ability to break arm tackles. He’s also effective in the passing attack, and has a great feel for the game. He’ll only get better as he gains weight and experience over the next two years.

Look for Pettaway to have offers from every major football program in the country by the time his recruitment is over.
