4-star UNC football target set to announce college decision in July

Payton Page, a top-100 recruit and one of the best defensive tackles in the nation, announced via Twitter on Monday that he would be making his college decision some time in July. Though Page doesn’t have an exact date yet, Mack Brown and the Tar Heels will have to wait no more than a month to find out if they will add yet another 4-star player to their already outstanding 2021 recruiting class.

Page had nearly three-dozen scholarship offers when he named a list of five finalists in mid-January. Along with the Tar Heels, Page included Clemson, LSU, Oregon and Tennessee as the schools he’d be moving forward with. Fast forward a few months, and Page decided to eliminate another pair of potential suitors — LSU and Oregon. Now, it’s just the Buckeyes, Tar Heels and Vols that stand to gain a commitment from Page, who is, at this point, heavily favored to pick Clemson.

That’s reflected by his 247Sports Crystal Ball, which indicates that just about anyone involved In his recruitment believes that he will end up with the Tigers next year. They currently hold 100 percent of the votes, including that of Steve Wiltfong, the site’s Director of Football Recruiting. For context, Wiltfong has correctly picked 278 of the 280 predictions he’s cast for the class of 2021.

It does, however, bode well for the Tar Heels that Page is an in-state product of neighboring Greensboro. The Tar Heels have practically put a fence around the state of North Carolina this year, already reeling in 11 of the state’s top 45 recruits. Whether or not UNC will be able to bring Page into the fold is unknown, but if anyone is going to steal him away from Dabo Sweeney and the Tigers, it’s the Tar Heels.

Page is ranked 81st in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s the No. 7 recruit among players at his position, and fourth in the state of North Carolina.
