UNC Basketball: Tar Heels targeting 5-star West Coast point guard?
Roy Williams, UNC basketball program in search of future point guard
Roy Williams and the North Carolina Tar Heels have long had the good fortune of securing talented point guard after talented point guard. After the departure of 2017 national champion and Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four, Joel Berry, the Tar Heels were graced with a season each from a pair of the nation’s most talented young floor generals. Those players, Coby White and Cole Anthony, both put up impressive numbers in their lone season at North Carolina, and both will have resulted in an NBA lottery pick by the time all is said and done.
Again in 2020, Williams and company were able to reel in another 5-star back court player, Caleb Love, who is arguably the top incoming pure point guard in college basketball. As talented as Love is, though, there’s no telling how long he’ll remain in the college ranks before making the move to professional basketball. With that in mind, the UNC coaching staff have been hard at work trying to secure their next elite point guard. And they aren’t stopping with the class of 2021 — where they’ve clearly prioritized 5-star point guard Kennedy Chandler, the nation’s No. 1 recruit among players at his position.
They’ve already offered a scholarship to 5-star point guard and North Carolina native Jaden Bradley, and they’re keeping close tabs on a few others. Among the latest is top-25 lead guard Dylan Andrews, a junior at Windward School in Los Angeles, California that’s already holding scholarship offers from some of the most renown basketball programs in America. Arizona, Kansas and UCLA are among the 10 offers that he currently has, as are Cal, Pittsburgh, Stanford and USC.
According to Stockrisers’ Jake Weingarten, North Carolina was among the schools that reached out to Andrews on Monday. Cal, Kansas, LSU, Texas and Vanderbilt were just a handful of the other programs that contacted Andrews, according to his high school coach. Both Cal and Kansas extended their offers the same day. Look for Andrews’ recruitment to continue heating up over the next several months. He should have a pretty star-studded list of offers by the time he makes a college decision.
Andrews is ranked 21st overall in the 247Sports Composite, fourth among point guard and No. 4 in the state of California. The Top247 has him even higher at No. 15, though Rivals and ESPN both value him slightly lower, and outside of 5-star status.
