Two former UNC Basketball players will play for Chris Paul’s team in The Basketball Tournament, set to take place on July 4th

While the NBA is still in the process of finalizing some details for their upcoming return in Orlando, there will be some basketball played before then.

The Basketball Tournament will make its return on July 4th with a fully quarantined 24-team bracket that will be played in Columbus, Ohio in the span of just 10 days. It will be our first taste of basketball since both the NCAA and NBA shut things down in March due to COVID-19.

When July 4th hits, North Carolina fans will have a rooting interest as well.

Two former North Carolina players will play for Team CP3 in the tournament as the league announced their rosters on Monday. Both Kennedy Meeks and P.J. Hairston are a part of Chris Paul’s team:

While Meeks and Hairston are the only two UNC players on the roster, they will be joined by in-state products Diante Baldwin (UNCG), James Dickey (UNCG), Ronshad Shabazz (App State) and general manager Chris Paul (Wake Forest).

Meeks played four seasons at North Carolina, averaging 10.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1 assist in 144 career games. He shot 55.4 percent from the field and turned out to be a really good four-year player, helping North Carolina win the national championship in 2017.

As for Hairston, he spent two seasons with the Tar Heels averaging 10 points, 3.2 rebounds and an assist in 77 career games. Hairston was a talented player but never really put it together and was suspended by the University as he didn’t return for the 2013–14 season. He ended up going to the G-League and was a first round pick of the Miami Heat in 2014.
