UNC Basketball: Tar Heels’ target expected to be No. 1 player in class
By Zack Pearson
A UNC Basketball recruiting target is expected to be the new No. 1 recruit in the 2020 class after a five-star prospect reclassified.
After turning in a Top 3 class for the 2020 cycle, Roy Williams and his staff are hoping they can deliver another solid class for the future of the North Carolina Tar Heels’ basketball program.
With seven offers out in 2021 and one commitment, there is still a lot of work to be done by Williams. The recruiting dead period has put a wrench in things for a lot of teams but the Tar Heels are still involved with a few key players.
Among them is five-star elite center Chet Holmgren.
The 7-foot, 190-pound center out of Minneapolis has been considered one of the top players in the 2021 class for a while now but just recently he made a big move in the rankings. Former No. 1 player Jonathan Kuminga has reportedly reclassified from the 2021 class to 2020 and is strongly considering heading to the NBA G-League.
The reports of Kuminga reclassifying broke last week but he has not officially made an announcement. Kuminga was shown in his high school graduation ceremony video which was hosted online and posted to YouTube.
With Kuminga gone, that means Holmgren is now the No. 1 overall player in the recruiting class with the 247 Sports Composite rankings. Holmgren will replace Kuminga in all major recruiting rankings when they are updated, pushing him up to the top of the list.
The center is an elite prospect with scouts raving about his ability to score the basketball from not only in the paint but on the perimeter as well. Jerry Meyer of 247 Sports called him the most unique prospect he’s ever seen, a high praise from a respected scout.
Holmgren has the chance to be a program changer in the 2021 class and currently has 28 offers including one from North Carolina. His recruitment has been silent of late and there’s really no solid prediction on where he may go but it’s rumored that Gonzaga is currently the favorite.
It appears as if UNC is still in the running but will need to make some serious progress this Summer.
