The Tar Heels women’s Basketball program landed a big five-star commitment from an in-state prospect on Saturday, adding to their class

The North Carolina Tar Heels’ women’s basketball program showed signs of turning the corner in new head coach Courtney Banghart’s first year. Despite not being able to finish the season, there is some hope for the Tar Heels program.

On Saturday, the program landed a big recruit for their 2021 recruiting class as five-star wing Teonni Key pledged her verbal commitment.

Key announced she will be attending North Carolina via a post on her Twitter account, ending her recruitment:

The addition of Key is a big one for UNC’s 2021 class joining fellow five-star Destiny Adams as the only two players committed so far. Both are graded 97 overall by ESPN, a great start to the 2021 cycle for Banghart and her program.

The 6-foot-3 Key is ranked No. 22 overall and picked the Tar Heels over scholarship offers from Auburn, UCONN, Georgia, Kentucky, NC State, Maryland, Notre Dame, South Carolina and Mississippi State.

The Cary, North Carolina product has really elevated her game over the past year or so, putting on an impressive showing at the Nike Nationals in July of 2019 as ESPN labeled her a “Athletic perimeter prospect with front court versatility.” Key also impressed at the Boo Williams invitational in April of 2019.

UNC now has the No. 22 and No. 35 overall players in ESPN’s Top 100 committed for 2021 and are in the running for more players as they can continue to build on their class.
