UNC Football commit Drake Maye was named the Male Athlete of the Year by the Charlotte Observer on Saturday morning

North Carolina is still building on their hot start to the 2021 recruiting class, currently having a Top 5 class per major ranking outlets. This comes on the heels of UNC turning in a Top 20 class for the 2020 cycle.

Among those 15 players committed in 2021 is quarterback Drake Maye.

As we get ready for the Summer and hopefully the return of football at all levels, Maye is being honored for his junior year. The Charlotte Observer named Maye their Male Athlete of the Year for the 2019-20 season. The announcement came on Saturday morning as the publication officially unveiled the news:

The Myers Park product is a two-sport athlete that stood out in both football and basketball this past season. The quarterback completed 210-of-290 passes (72 percent) for 3,512 yards, 50 TDs and just two interceptions last season. He followed it up by  averaging16.1 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and had 15 double-doubles. That earned him all-conference honors.

The four-star quarterback originally pledged his verbal commitment to Alabama in July of 2019, picking the Crimson Tide over UNC, Clemson and Georgia. But even with that, many didn’t think his recruitment was officially over just yet.

Maye then had a change of heart in March of 2020, decommitting from Alabama and verbally committing to North Carolina. His father, Mark, was a standout for the Tar Heels’ football team while his brother Luke won a national championship in basketball with UNC while playing four years for the program. His other brother, Cole, won the men’s baseball national championship with Florida.
