A UNC Basketball recruit in the 2021 class talked about a recent meeting with Roy Williams and the Tar Heels in a blog

We are in uncharted territory with a recruiting dead period currently going on in college sports at least through the month of July. Coaches and players cannot take any trips at the moment, making it difficult for some recruitments.

Instead, both sides have had to resort to teleconference meetings which have actually worked well for many programs.

For the North Carolina Tar Heels, they are focusing on their 2021 class and hoping to build on a Top 3 class they have turned in for 2020. They currently have one player committed in 2021 and six offers out to prospects. That doesn’t include a few others they have shown interest in.

One of those prospects that the Tar Heels are showing significant interest in is five-star forward Jabari Smith Jr. The Georgia native is ranked No. 5 overall in the 247 Sports recruiting rankings and is an elite player in this class.

While Smith Jr. doesn’t have an offer just yet from the Tar Heels, one could be looming in the near future. On Thursday, Smith Jr. updated his recruiting blog on Sports Illustrated and revealed that he has recently talked to both Williams and coach Hubert Davis via teleconference:

"I’ve done a few Zoom calls here recently; I did one with Tennessee and that went great. Coach (Rick) Barnes and the assistants were on and we just talked about a lot of different things.I’m planning Zoom calls with Georgia and Auburn soon. The most recent school to reach out was North Carolina. I talked to Coach (Roy) Williams and Coach (Hubert) Davis."

As mentioned above, the Tar Heels have yet to offer Smith Jr. but it certainly feels like it’s only a matter of time before that happens. There is significant interest between the two sides and the Tar Heels could use some help on the wing in the future.
