UNC Football: Top corner recruit dishes out on Tar Heels, finalists
By Zack Pearson
A top UNC Football recruiting target broke down his top four finalists shortly after making the update to his recruitment
The recruitment for defensive back Tony Grimes won’t be over until December when he officially makes his announcement. But this past weekend, Grimes provided a big update to his recruitment.
On Sunday, Grimes released his top 4 teams providing an update on his recruitment and will now focus on those programs moving forward. Making the cut was North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio State and Texas A&M, setting up a big battle over the Summer and Fall.
Following the release of his final four programs, Grimes talked to 247 Sports to break down each program and where he stands.
Here is what Grimes revealed about North Carolina:
"“UNC has a great staff. Coach Mack Brown is the only college coach right now in the Hall of Fame. He knows how to win. (Cornerbacks) coach (Dre) Bly played at a high level in college and the NFL, and he trained (NFLer) Stephon Gilmore on a regular basis. They have a top 10 business school as well. My connection with coach Dre Bly has grown and built since he got there.”"
As you see above, the connection with former NFL standout Dre Bly is an impression that has been made on Grimes. Bly is the lead recruiter in this for the Tar Heels which might be a big advantage for them.
Grimes is the top ranked defensive back in the 2021 recruiting class and the No. 7 overall player per 247 Sports. He’s an elite five-star recruit and would be the biggest get for Mack Brown and his staff in the coaches’ second tenure.
With an impressive start to the 2021 class, the Tar Heels now have their sights set on adding this top recruit. But where do they stand?
The Tar Heels have picked up three of the six Crystal Ball predictions on 247 Sports including one from lead expert Brian Dohn back in May. That’s a good sign for the Tar Heels early in this recruitment but there is a long way to go until the December announcement date.
