Coaching staffs for UNC football, basketball set to return to campus in June

The University of North Carolina announced on Friday morning that their coaching staffs for football, and men’s and women’s basketball would be able to return to campus on June 12. It’s the first time that they’ve been able to do so since mid-March when the campus closed thanks to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic that essentially shut down sports across the globe.

"“We do not yet know how many fans we may be able to welcome to competitions,” Cunningham wrote in a message posted on the school’s official website. “We are planning for our sports teams to compete — with numerous safety precautions in place."

Per a release from the school, football student-athletes will be able to return between June 12 to July 1, but in four separate groups (June 12, 19, 26, 29). The men’s and women’s basketball staffs and players will return to campus on July 6. A number of other sports will be returning to campus between June 1 and August 3, and the timeline for return is as seen below.

• June 1 — Facilities staff members
• June 8 — Sports Medicine staff
• June 12 — Coaching staffs for football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball
• June 12-July 1 — Football student-athletes, in four separate groups (June 12, 19, 26, 29)
• June 15 — Strength and Conditioning, Equipment and Administration staff members
• June 22 — Coaching staffs for field hockey, volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer and cross country
• July 6 — Men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes
• July 13 — Field hockey, volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer and cross country student-athletes
• August 3 — Coaches and student-athletes from the remainder of our teams, and remaining department staff members

Although it’s still unknown at this point how schools will return to sports in the fall, Cunningham indicated on Friday that UNC will continue evaluating testing and safety protocols for the sports teams, as well as the student body.
