The UNC Football program will be the first to return to campus this Summer as AD Bubba Cunningham lade out his plan on Friday
As the rest of the country continues to open up state by state, there has been some good news regarding the 2020 college football season recently.
On Friday, that news got a little better with a plan from North Carolina Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham. Just a few days after the University laid out a plan for their Fall semester that will start early and conclude before Thanksgiving Break, the AD revealed some news about when athletes will be able to return to campus.
And up first is the football program.
Per Cunningham, football players will be able to return to campus beginning June 12th and will be welcomed in four groups on these dates: June 12, 19, 26, 29. Prior to that, facility staff members will go to work on June 1 while the sports medicine staff reports a week later on June 8th.
Coaching staffs for football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball will be permitted on campus beginning June 12th as well.
This is big news for the football program that enters a year with high expectations. They have been unable to be on campus due to the COVID-19 pandemic and have had to resort to being at home working out and doing drills.
UNC head coach Mack Brown spoke on the process Friday afternoon and revealed that players and coaches will be wearing masks during meetings, larger position groups will likely move to larger rooms. He also revealed that the entire team will be in place on July 1.
The program plans to house players that are living on campus in the Parker dorm and each one will have single rooms.
While we are still a few months from the start of the college season, this is certainly good news towards progress of the season actually happening. However, there are still hurdles to overcome.
