UNC Basketball: Will 2021 SG’s recruitment come down to Tar Heels and Wildcats?
By Zack Pearson
Are we heading for another recruiting matchup between the North Carolina Tar Heels and Arizona Wildcats?
Back in April the North Carolina Tar Heels beat out Arizona amongst other teams for four-star shooting guard Kerwin Walton in the 2020 recruiting class. Walton wrapped up UNC’s six-man class that is ranked in the top 3 across all recruiting sites.
Now the Tar Heels might find themselves in another recruiting battle with Arizona for a shootin guard in 2021.
With the 2020 cycle over, the Tar Heels have turned their attention to 2021 where they have one committed recruit and seven active offers out. The latest offer was to D’Marco Dunn, a three-star shooting guard that is originally from Arizona but now plays in the state of North Carolina.
The Tar Heels offered Dunn last week but on Wednesday, Arizona entered the mix with an offer to Dunn.
Per Wildcat Authority on 247 Sports, Dunn was hoping to land an offer from the Wildcats, a team he grew up watching while living in Arizona:
"Dunn talked to WildcatAuthority a little over a week ago and made it clear that he wanted an offer from the Wildcats.“Yeah, Arizona just called and it was really cool to hear from them because I grew up there watching the Cats,” Dunn said. “I don’t have an offer or anything like that but it would be really cool to get something like that, especially considering that I have a lot of friends out there. It’s great though because once I started getting some offers, more"
It appears as if an offer from Arizona was eventually going to come for Dunn but now his recruitment is starting to heat up.
We wrote on how a UNC offer will amp up the recruitment for Dunn and now that he has landed one from the Wildcats, we could see a big recruiting battle over the next few months. UNC is always a big offer for recruits, not saying Arizona isn’t, but the hometown factor does play a part in this situation. The Wildcats are familiar with Dunn from his time living in the state and now UNC has the chance to watch him play at Westover.
With a total of 19 offers, Dunn does have his options. He’s received offers from Maryland, Vanderbilt, Xavier, Louisville, and Marquette amongst others so far. But UNC and Arizona might be the favorites when it’s all said and done.
It wouldn’t shock us to see another recruiting battle between the two teams especially with the recent history including recruits Josh Green, Zeke Nnaji and Kerwin Walton. Can the Tar Heels even up the score here?
