UNC Athletics: NCAA extends recruiting dead period through July

The NCAA has extended the recruiting dead period once again through July, which impacts UNC Athletics during this time
The NCAA’s recruiting dead period that was installed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic has been extended once again.
The NCAA announced on Thursday that they will extend the recruiting dead period through the month of July with it set to expire on July 31st. It’s not the first time the date has been extended, either.
Back in April they announced it would be extended once again for all sports through the month of May. The Division I Council Coordination Committee released this statement:
“The extension maintains consistent recruiting rules for all sports and allows coaches to focus on the student-athletes who may be returning to campus,” said Council chair M. Grace Calhoun, athletics director at Pennsylvania. “The committee is committed to reviewing the dead period again in late June or early July.”
In addition, the committee announced that they will continue to evaluate the dead period with help from medical experts before finally lifting the ban.
The ban has been a unique one as coaches in all sports have had to resort to teleconference to meet with staff and hold meetings with recruits. It’s an odd time we are in but the adjustments have been made and programs are doing the best they can.
However, there is some potential good news.
Beginning June 1, strength coaches can monitor athletes’ workouts through teleconference but cannot direct them. The University of North Carolina announced their plans on Friday for athletes returning to campus. Bubba Cunningham revealed that the athletes can return on June 12th beginning with football players and then basketball on July 6th.
