UNC Football coach Dre Bly is leading the charge for a five-star defensive back that the Tar Heels are hoping to reel in

The North Carolina football program is putting together one heck of a recruiting class for 2021 and it’s coming at the right time. The program is fresh off a 7-6 season and has high expectations for the upcoming 2020 campaign as they are being labeled as the favorites to win the ACC Coastal Division.

With the return of Mack Brown, the program’s future is very bright.

Brown and his staff have been able to go on the recruiting trail and land some very talented players in their classes so far. Together, UNC has been able to build a recruiting class for 2021 that is currently ranked No. 4 overall per 247 Sports and they still have a few big targets left on their board.

Among those targets is five-star defensive back Tony Grimes, ranks No. 7 overall nationally and No. 1 at his position in the 247 Sports rankings. He’s the top target still left on UNC’s board and would be a huge get for the Tar Heels’ class. But one coach just might be a key in landing Grimes when he decides to announce on December 1.

247 Sports wrote on Grimes’ recruitment and the teams that are still involved, listing the Tar Heels as one of those teams. The writer, Chris Hummer, wrote on how Dre Bly could have a big impact on Grimes’ decision as he’s leading the charge for the Tar Heels:

"That resume is a huge reason the Tar Heels have Grimes’ attention.“Coach Dre Bly, a Hall of Fame Pro Bowler, Super Bowler, c’mon now, it doesn’t get any better than that as a coach,” Grimes told 247Sports’ Brian Dohn in April.Bly’s involvement in Grimes’ recruiting – and UNC’s overall push upward under Brown – had 247Sports thinking about some other famous former NFL players, at least of the more modern variety, who are quietly making their mark as college football assistants across the country."

Bly played at North Carolina before having a long career in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams, San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, and Detroit Lions. He decided to return to Chapel Hill and coach under Brown’s staff and so far, he’s had a heck of start in recruiting players.

If Bly and the Tar Heels can somehow land Grimes in this recruitment, it would go a long way for this program.
