Former UNC Basketball standout Ty Lawson won the “best point guard” in program history tournament that was run by the program’s Twitter account

The basketball program at the University of North Carolina is known for a lot of things over the 100+ years of its existence. One of those things that you associate with the program is the excellent play from the point guard position.

It’s safe to call UNC “Point Guard U” due to the talent the program has churned out over the history ranging from players like Phil Ford to Kenny Smith to Ed Cota to Ty Lawson and more recently Marcus Paige, Joel Berry, Coby White and Cole Anthony. The list goes on and on.

While we are still in this recruiting dead period (which is soon to be lifted), the topics have been all over the place and outlets have had to get creative. One of those accounts is the official Twitter for the UNC Basketball program. Just a week or so ago they launched a Twitter tournament where fans could vote bracket style for the best point guard in program history.

Thousands voted for every matchup until there was just two left: Ty Lawson and Joel Berry, two National Champion winning point guards for the Tar Heels. Lawson beat out Marcus Paige while Berry beat out Raymond Felton to reach the finals. But in the finals it was Lawson that earned the nod and won the virtual tournament:

Lawson played three seasons at North Carolina, averaging 13.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 5.8 assists while shooting 51.7 percent from the field in his three-year career.

That included a junior season in which he averaged 16.6 points, 2.1 steals, 3 rebounds and 6.6 assists for the Tar Heels. In that year, Lawson was named the ACC Player of the Year and to the NCAA All-Tourney Team while helping lead the TarHeels to a dominant national championship run.
