UNC Basketball: Offers continue coming in for 5-star SG Trevor Keels
Scholarship offers continue coming in for 5-star UNC basketball target Trevor Keels
With the nation’s No. 2-ranked 2020 recruiting class already in tow, Roy Williams and the North Carolina Tar Heels are hard at work on the class of 2021. They’ve extended scholarship offers to eight players in the class, and have an early commitment from 4-star small forward Dontrez Styles.
One of their top recruiting targets, and quite possibly the class’s best shooter, Trevor Keels, continues to be a popular name among coaches and scouts. Keels was a 4-star prospect, and ranked 31st in the nation on January 31. Less than four months later, he’s a 5-star prospect up 13 spots to No. 18.
A 6-foot-5, 210-pound shooting guard out of Paul VI Catholic in Fairfax, Virginia, Keels is an athletic player that can score from all three levels. He’s got great strength for a shooting guard, and length that should help him create mismatches on both ends of the court. He’s a solid rebounder for his position, and a capable defender.
The senior guard is already holding offers from a couple-dozen schools including Butler, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Duke, Florida, Georgetown, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State, Seton Hall, Villanova, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. And he’s already held Zoom calls with Connecticut, Duke, Georgetown, Louisville, Michigan, North Carolina, Villanova and Virginia.
Keels’ father, Roland, recently spoke with Zagsblog’s Adam Zagoria about a handful of the programs recruiting his son the hardest, including the Tar Heels, who have discussed with Keels how they plan on using him if he commits to UNC.
"“They think his game fits them,” Keels said. “They need perimeter players, they need a shooter. They need a play-maker. They need perimeter guys and they think he fits the need they will have in 2021.”"
Keels has taken official visits to Ohio State and Virginia, and unofficial visits to Georgetown and Villanova. He’s in no rush to make a commitment, and plans to take more visits before coming to a final decision. He’s the nation’s No. 2-ranked shooting guard in the class of 2021 according to the 247Sports Composite, and the top prospect in the state of Virginia.
