UNC Basketball: Analyst makes prediction for Tar Heels’ 2021 class
By Zack Pearson
Which targets are likely to join the UNC Basketball program in the 2021 recruiting class? One analyst projects who could make up their class
With the 2020 basketball recruiting cycle coming to an end for the North Carolina Tar Heels, the focus has shifted to the 2021 class as Roy Williams and his staff are hoping to replenish the roster.
UNC earned their first commitment in the 2021 class back in April when four-star forward Dontrez Styles committed. Since then, UNC has been named in the Top 10 or Top 5 for a few recruits, staying in the recruitment.
Williams and his staff have offered a total of eight players including Styles who committed and Paolo Banchero who eliminated the Tar Heels from contention. So as it stands now there are six recruits the Tar Heels are still pursuing with offers.
But who will join Styles? While it’s still very early in the recruiting cycle, one recruiting analyst touched on their situation.
In his Twitter Tuesday article, Rivals’ reporter Corey Evans was asked about UNC’s class and who he expects to join Styles. He broke it down while also talking about the 2020 class and who will stay and who will leave. Here is what Evans said:
"Kennedy Chandler kept North Carolina on his final school list but Tennessee is the team to beat. I would monitor Hunter Sallis, who just picked up an offer from the Tar Heels last week. He could be the next five-star lead guard to pick the Heels but a decision is still far out of sight.Chet Holmgren just picked up an offer, too, and North Carolina has started to express greater interest in Jabari Smith. Trevor Keels holds an offer from the blueblood, as does likely reclass candidate Caleb Houstan."
It sure as heck sounds like it’s going to depend on who does leave from that 2020 class. The Tar Heels will lose Garrison Brooks to graduation as well as Andrew Platek, Walker Miller, and K.J. Smith freeing up a few scholarships. If no one leaves, that means including Styles the Tar Heels will have 10 scholarships accounted for, not leaving much room.
That will be an interesting situation to monitor in terms of the 2021 class and the targets UNC is pursuing.
