The UNC Football program makes the Top 5 for a 2021 wide receiver target as he updates his list on Saturday night

Despite this dead period in recruiting imposed by the NCAA back in March, recruits and teams are still staying in contact through video chat programs.

For the North Carolina Tar Heels, it hasn’t slowed down their momentum one bit. After turning in a Top 20 class for 2020, Mack Brown and his staff have the No. 2 overall class in 2021 per the 247 Sports composite rankings and have landed a few commitments over the past month.

Brown has been able to land some big in-state recruits, dominating the 2021 class in the state of North Carolina. But he has his eyes on some other big recruits in other states as well.

One of them is three-star wide receiver J.J. Jones out of South Carolina. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound recruit from Myrtle Beach is ranked No. 414 overall and is the No. 3 player in the state of South Carolina per 247 Sports. On Saturday, Jones made a big update to his recruitment as he cut his list down to five programs with North Carolina included.

Joining the Tar Heels in that Top 5 are Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi State, and South Carolina, all SEC programs. UNC is the lone Atlantic Coast Conference program in that group.

UNC has been in the recruitment from Jones for a while now, so it’s not really shocking to see them in his Top 5. As it stands now, in-state South Carolina might be the team to beat as they have 8 of the 9 Crystal Ball predictions on 247 Sports. That doesn’t guarantee that Jones will commit there and there is still a long way to go in his recruitment but the Gamecocks have to feel good about their chances.

The Tar Heels will hope to get Jones on their campus once the dead period is lifted and potentially impress him one last time.
