A top UNC Basketball target in the 2021 recruiting class could take a visit this Fall to Chapel Hill per one recruiting analyst

These days recruiting in college athletics is a little different.

The NCAA imposed a “dead period” for recruiting in all sports back in late March and then extended it again into May. Recruits and coaches are not allowed to go on visits and the only communication can come through video chats.

It’s made things a little tough for these coaches but we have still seen some commitments take place despite that. For Roy Williams and the North Carolina, Tar Heels they have landed two commitments in this dead period, snagging one in each of their 2020 and 2021 class.

But with the 2020 cycle being over, UNC has shifted their focus to the 2021 class and the targets they have there. Among them is five-star center Chet Holmgren.

The 7-foot, 190-pound center out of Minnesota is one of a few players that has an offer from UNC in this 2021 class. He’s ranked as the No. 2 player in the 247 Sports recruiting rankings and has a versatile skill-set for his height. He appears to be a great fit for what Williams likes in his big men and landing him in Chapel Hill would be huge.

Holmgren’s recruitment has been a little silent as of late but he was one of the topics in Rivals’ analyst Core Evans’ most recent column breaking down seven uncommitted recruits in the 2021 class. Evans touched on Holmgren and dropped a nugget that he could make a visit to Chapel Hill this Fall:

"The in-state Minnesota Gophers are strong contenders, too, thanks to their proximity to him and because his father played for the program in the 1980s. Georgetown, Memphis and North Carolina are three schools that Holmgren could potentially visit in the fall, but a commitment is not expected until some time next year."

That’s good news that Holmgren could visit UNC before he commits. But we don’t know yet if universities will even be open come Fall. That’s the big question.

Either way, it’s good that UNC is still involved and they should be considered a legit contender in this recruitment.
