Class of 2020 UNC basketball signee Caleb Love is the nation’s No. 1-ranked point guard

In light of recent developments that saw former UCLA commit Daishen Nix decide to forego college for a season in the NBA G-League, University of North Carolina signee Caleb Love will be the top-ranked freshman point guard in the country next season.

Nix, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound native of Las Vegas, Nevada, is the No. 15 player overall, and the top point guard in the class. With his decision to skip college for the pros, though, that leaves Love, the No. 18 prospect in the class, as the nation’s highest-rated incoming freshman point guard. Love had the opportunity to take the same path as Nix, but turned down the G-League’s offer to bypass college on the way to the NBA’s minor league system.

That was fortunate a North Carolina squad that lost starting point guard and leading scorer Cole Anthony to the upcoming NBA Draft, and lacks the kind of depth to compete next season without a viable incoming replacement.

A 6-foot-3, 170-pound lead guard from St. Louis, Missouri, Love is a an excellent scorer and facilitator. He can play both guard positions, which affords the 2020-21 Tar Heels more versatility and depth than they had a season ago. And despite being a score-first point guard, he’s becoming a solid passer that can set his teammates up in good position to get buckets. He’s capable of playing in the half court, or leading the Tar Heels’ fast-paced, run-and-gun offense.

Love leads a terrific freshman class the features two other 5-star players in centers Day’Ron Sharpe and Walker Kessler, 4-star combo guard R.J. Davis and a pair of excellent shooters in Puff Johnson and Kerwin Walton.
