Roy Williams and the UNC basketball program await the decision of 4-star shooting guard Kerwin Walton.

Okay, let’s try this again.

Class of 2020 prospect Kerwin Walton is set to announce his college decision some time Monday morning. If that sounds familiar, it should. Walton’s decision was initially slated for Saturday, and when that didn’t happen, it was pushed back to Sunday. Similar to the day prior, there wasn’t a peep from the Walton camp on Sunday. That left everyone, including each of his six finalists, wondering what exactly was going on.

Sources close to Rivals now believe that Walton is preparing to announce his decision some time from mid-to-late Monday morning. Early Monday morning, Rivals recruiting analyst Eric Bossi highlighted the weekend’s peculiar events, and what he expects to come of the Walton announcement, if it happens.

"“Say this for undecided four-star shooting guard Kerwin Walton, he sure knows how to build up some suspense,” Bossi writes. “The 6-foot-5 sniper from Minnesota was supposed to decide between Arizona, Creighton, Georgetown, Minnesota, and North Carolina on Saturday. He didn’t. The decision was then expected on Sunday and didn’t happen again. As of late Sunday night, sources indicated to me that they were hoping to hear a decision by mid to late morning Monday. My futurecast pick has been with North Carolina but over the weekend pretty much everybody involved was left scratching their heads about what is going down and who he will pick (if he does decide on Monday) is anybody’s guess at this point.”"

There’s also a growing belief that Walton’s recruitment may be down to a two-program race between Minnesota and North Carolina. If that’s the case, it makes me wonder if either Walton or his family are struggling with him leaving his home state for college. And if so, could that end up being a problem later on down the line? Or maybe I’ve had so much time to ponder all of these scenarios at this point that I’m making something out of nothing. Who knows?

What we do know is that whichever one of Walton’s six prospective teams gets his commitment, they’ll have a multiple-year college player that comes in as one of the best long-range shooters in his class.

The 6-foot-5, 195-pound prospect is ranked 99th overall in the 247Sports Composite for 2020. A senior at Hopkins High School, Walton is ranked 17th among players at his position, and No. 5 in the state of Minnesota.
