UNC Basketball: Tar Heels five-star target set to trim list
By Zack Pearson
A top UNC Basketball recruiting target is set to cut his list down to six finalists soon. But will the Tar Heels make the cut?
The North Carolina Tar Heels landed their first commitment of the 2021 class last Saturday when four-star forward Dontrez Styles pledged his verbal to the program. With a really good 2020 recruiting class that is ranked No. 3 overall, the future of the program is bright in Chapel Hill.
During this quiet period for recruiting, Roy Williams and his staff have still found ways to have an impact.
They have held a few different conference calls via Zoom with recruits and have been in the news regarding some top targets. One of those targets in 2021 is five-star forward Paolo Banchero, the 6-foot-9, 235-pound recruit is ranked No. 4 overall in the 247 Sports recruiting rankings and has a total of 17 offers in his recruitment.
Banchero has drawn interest from several top programs in the country including North Carolina, Duke, Arizona, Gonzaga and Kentucky among others. He has a list of 10 schools as it currently stands but he’s set to make an update to that.
The forward revealed on Twitter that he will cut his list down to six programs soon, naming them his six finalists as it will be his final cut:
While there really isn’t a known favorite in the race to land Banchero, it would be shocking to see UNC NOT included in that list of six. It’s one of the places he was able to take a visit to last year and recently talked to coach Williams via Zoom during this quiet time.
Banchero did not reveal a date for his final six but we imagine it’s likely coming within the week.
