UNC Basketball in the NBA: Coby White earns rookie honors from CBS
By Zack Pearson
Former UNC Basketball standout Coby White picked up some honors from CBS Sports last week as he made the NBA All-Rookie Team
The NBA season ended abruptly back in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic and there hasn’t been any live sports since. With no clear solution in sight, it’s unlikely the season will fully continue as we could see the league move straight to the playoffs when they resume.
If that happens, that means we have seen the last of Coby White in his rookie season with the Chicago Bulls just when he was starting to turn it on and show why the team was high on him in the draft.
The NBA hasn’t officially announced any awards or playoff seeding as of yet but CBS Sports decided that they would release their version of awards starting with the All-Rookie team. The outlet published their All-Rookie team for the shortened 2019-20 season and on there is the former North Carolina standout.
White was named to the All-Rookie Second Team in CBS Sports’ release as they had this to say about the guard:
"The North Carolina product and No. 7 overall pick in the NBA Draft, White was having a solid rookie campaign before things shut down. The No. 25 overall player in the 247Sports Composite from the class of 2018 was averaging 13.2 points per game and shooting 35.4 percent from deep for a Bulls team that has some young players showing promise."
Before the season was cancelled, White was on a tear for the Bulls and playing the best basketball of his rookie year. He seemed to find his groove and eventually got his first start of his career back in February.
His play earned him the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month award for February as White had a stretch of scoring 20 points in six of seven games and shot 46.2 percent from the three-point line in that span.
In 65 games as a rookie, White averaged 13.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. It’s a shame the season came to a halt just as White was playing his best basketball.
