UNC Basketball Recruiting: Updates on class of 2020 and 2021 targets in early April
By Zack Pearson
Chet Holmgren had nothing but good things to say about UNC
With the 2020 class wrapping up for the Tar Heels, the focus continues to shift over to 2021 and how UNC can secure some recruits. One target on their board is five-star center Chet Holmgren.
The Minneapolis, Minnesota native is ranked No. 2 overall in the 247 Sports recruiting rankings and is an elite center prospect. With Garrison Brooks leaving after next season, the Tar Heels would be looking to add at least another post player. That importance grows if Armando Bacot leaves after next season and Walker Kessler or Day’Ron Sharpe decide to stay just one year.
Holmgren is a prospect that is not only a dominant rebounder but an elite scorer. He’s a force in the paint at 7-feet tall,190 pounds and can really get up and down the floor, which is what Roy Williams loves to see from his post players.
There hasn’t been many updates on Holmgren’s recruitment in this quiet period until just recently when he dished on the teams involved to Rivals’ Corey Evans:
"It is definitely, again, the legacy there with its basketball program is crazy. To think that I have the chance to play in the same place that Michael Jordan, Vince Carter, and the list goes on, it is pretty crazy the guys that have gone there. Coach (Roy) Williams, he is great at what he does and has been there for a long time. I am very interested in them and there is reasons for why I am not rushing things and taking my time with my recruitment because there is so much that goes into how you fit into a school based off the personnel that they have and you just don’t know until right up until after your senior year with who is going to be there, who is leaving and if there is six big dudes at a school, it is definitely going to be something that weighs into my decision."
Holmgren has a total of 26 offers in his recruitment, including one from UNC but has taken just two official visits so far. He visited Gonzaga and Ohio State so far in his recruitment but does plan on taking more visits. He told Evans that he hopes to visit UNC before making his decision next Spring.
It’s still early in Holmgren’s recruitment but it appears as if UNC is in a good spot right now for him and should make his list whenever he decides to trim it. This will be a recruitment to watch over the next year.
