4-star UNC basketball target Kerwin Walton has set a date for his college decision

In just two weeks, six college basketball programs and their fan bases will know the destination of 4-star shooting guard Kerwin Walton. Walton, one of the few remaining uncommitted players in the 247Sports Composite top-100, will make his announcement on Saturday, April 25. The news was broke by Stockrisers’ Jake Weingarten late Friday night.

The 6-foot-5, 195-pound prospect is ranked 97th overall in the class of 2020. A senior at Hopkins High School, Walton is ranked 17th among players at his position, and No. 5 in the state of Minnesota. Walton’s half-dozen potential suitors are anxiously awaiting his decision in hopes of picking up one of the class’s best pure shooters.

Along with his ability to shoot the rock, Walton’s got great size for his position. He can score from all three levels, but is best beyond the three-point line. He’s a capable ball handler, and passes well for his position. He drives the lane well, has good court vision, and is a good on-ball defender. The Tar Heels, in particular, could use a player like that. Given his size and skill set, he could spend time at both the shooting guard position, and on the wing where North Carolina is a bit thin.

And the good news for Roy Williams and the Tar Heels? Walton may very well be headed to Chapel Hill next season. Just hours before his decision date was announced on Friday night, Rivals recruiting analyst Eric Bossi picked North Carolina as the likely landing spot for Walton. Several of Bossi’s colleagues have picked Arizona as the favorite, but their predictions all came from November and December of last year.

Keeping It Heel highlighted on Friday the impact of Brandon Huffman’s transfer from the UNC hoops program, and the possibility for Walton to slide into a scholarship role there. It’s a done deal by no means, but the way things are going over the past couple of days, I like the Tar Heels’ chances to add to their star-studded 2020 recruiting class.
