The UNC Basketball program could soon find out their fate with a big transfer target from the West Coast this year

The market for transfer guard Trey Wertz out of Santa Clara was a big one when he announced his decision to transfer just a few weeks back.

Since then, Wertz has cut his list twice over the past week or so and now has his eyes set on seven finalists as the offseason continues. Among those seven finalists are the North Carolina Tar Heels, who could use a veteran guard on their roster for the 2021-22 season.

Wertz is not a graduate transfer so he would have to sit out a year unless he somehow gets a waiver from the NCAA which is unlikely. With UNC’s scholarships taken up for next year, he would fit in with their plans for the 2021-22 season.

Joining UNC on Wertz’s finalists list he announced last week are Arizona, Butler, Notre Dame, Virginia, Ohio State and Oklahoma. A solid list of seven finalists. With other transfers already making their decisions, Wertz could be the next one to do so as a decision is likely looming.

Wertz’s decision was one of the topics in Rivals recruiting analyst Corey Evans’ ‘Wednesday Leftovers’ column he put out this morning. Here is what Evans had to say about a timeline for Wertz:

"Look for Trey Wertz to make his decision shortly. He has cut his list to a final seven of Arizona, Butler, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Virginia."

Shortly could mean as soon as this week and probably as late next week in our opinion.

As head coach Roy Williams goes through these unprecedented times with recruiting, he will have to impress Wertz through video chat. Something that has become the norm for recruiting as we go through this COVID-19 situation.

The Tar Heels do have a Top 3 lass coming in for 2020 featuring five-star guards Caleb Love and R.J. Davis but after that, the depth is very slim. UNC also doesn’t have a recruit committed in 2021 yet, so adding Wertz becomes more important as the days go by.
