UNC Basketball: Tar Heels make final cut for transfer target
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program made the final list for a big transfer target from Santa Clara that will be eligible beginning in 2021.
Earlier this week transfer target Trey Wertz made a big update to his recruitment, naming his 10 schools that he is focusing on the most. That included the North Carolina Tar Heels, a program seeking some help on the wing for the future of their roster.
Now just a few days later, Wertz has made another update.
The Santa Clara guard has announced that he is down to just seven finalists in his transfer situation: Arizona, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Butler and Virginia. He made the announcement Friday night on Twitter:

Wertz cut N.C. State, Xavier and Stanford from his list this week and will now focus on these seven teams.
The Charlotte, North Carolina native announced last week that he was entering the transfer portal, opting to leave Santa Clara with two years of eligibility. Right away dozens of teams reached out, including the Tar Heels, and now his decision appears to be coming sooner rather than later.
Wertz is not a graduate transfer so he won’t be eligible right away to play. Instead, he will have to sit out a year before playing out the final two years of his eligibility.
North Carolina is in a bit of a scholarship bind going into next season as they will welcome in a five-man recruiting class. Point guard Cole Anthony is likely leaving after just one season and when that happens, UNC will still be maxed out. However, for the 2021-22 season, the Tar Heels will have a scholarship open and would welcome Wertz to the roster.
With the update of this list, Wertz recruitment could be ending at any time and will be something to monitor closely moving forward.
