UNC Basketball: 5-star UNC target is as good as gone
5-star UNC basketball target Ziaire Williams has been a high priority for Roy Williams and the Tar Heels, but he’s as good as gone.
Roy Williams and the North Carolina basketball program have remained in contact with Ziaire Williams over the past several months despite widespread belief that the 5-star prospect is unlikely to leave the West Coast for college in the fall.
That notion was reinforced by Rivals’ recruiting analyst Eric Bossi this week when he doubled-down on his prior claim that the USC Trojans are the most likely destination for Williams.
"“Last week in our making the case series, I wrote that I felt USC had the best chance with Ziaire Williams, 2020’s No. 6 player,” Bossi writes. “I feel even stronger about it today than I did a week ago and I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear something in the near future about him being ready to decide.”"
The Tar Heels and their fans had remained hopeful that Williams would commit to North Carolina in the spring. And while his recruitment has drawn out the way they hoped it would, he doesn’t appear to be headed for Chapel Hill upon making his decision — one that we anticipate happening some time over the next month or so.
If it is, in fact, USC that Williams chooses to attend for what will likely be his lone year of college basketball, expect the Trojans to fare well in a not-so-competitive Pac-12 Conference next season. Williams will undoubtedly start, and make an immediate impact regardless which school he ends up at.
The 6-foot-7, 175-pound senior from Sierra Canyon High School is ranked No. 5 in the class of 2020. He’s first among players at his position, and third in the state of California.
