Roy Williams and the UNC basketball program have extended their latest scholarship offer to class of 2021 small forward Dontrez Styles.

Roy Williams isn’t about to let the NCAA-mandated recruiting “dead period” keep him from getting a scholarship offer out to the state’s top-ranked player. Despite a restriction on in-person evaluation and contact amid the coronovirus pandemic, Williams reached out to Kinston’s Dontrez Styles with his seventh offer of the 2021 season.

Styles, a 6-foot-7, 190-pound small forward, is ranked 57th in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s the 12th-ranked player at his position, and No. 1 in the state of North Carolina. He’s also the latest in a series of big-time players from the Kinston area that includes former Tar Heel sharpshooter Reggie Bullock, and former Duke wing Brandon Ingram.

Styles is currently holding better than a dozen scholarship offers, including ones from Clemson, Georgetown, Maryland, NC State, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M, VCU and Wake Forest. He’s also gotten early interest from Louisville and Xavier, among others.

Williams watched Styles play as recently as February 4, but he and his coaching staff have been monitoring him for over a year. In that time, they’ve seen him average 19.7 points and 11 rebounds per game (per MaxPreps) for 26-4 Kinston High School. He also averaged 15.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game playing for Team CP3 on the Nike EYBL circuit.

Styles is a versatile forward that can play multiple positions, hit shots out to the three-point line, play tenacious defense and use his athleticism to impact the game’s final score in a number of ways. He plays with a tremendous amount of energy and effort, and would fit well into the Tar Heels’ fast-paced, up-and-down style of play.

He joins point guard Kennedy Chandler, shooting guard Trevor Keels, small forwards Harrison Ingram and Patrick Baldwin, and power forwards Paolo Banchero and Chet Holmgren as class of 2021 prospects with UNC offers.
