UNC Basketball: Tar Heels still recruiting 2020 four-star SG hard
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program is still recruiting this 2020 four-star shooting guard hard according to a recent interview he did over the weekend
While COVID-19 has shut down the sports world including all Spring collegiate sports and even recruiting until at least April, there has been some news regarding the North Carolina Tar Heels basketball program.
UNC’s season came to an end the night before the remainder of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament was cancelled and then eventually the 2020 NCAA Tournament. With the new ban on recruiting through April, the news will be scarce.
However, over the weekend there was some news about a 2020 UNC Basketball recruiting target and where they stand in his recruitment.
With a Top 3 class already signed including three five-star recruits and two four-star recruits in 2020, the Tar Heels could potentially add one more. There would need to be an open scholarship available somehow, and if UNC could make it work that player could be four-star Kerwin Walton.
The Minnesota native has a total of 23 offers in his recruitment so far, including one from North Carolina. He’s been on UNC’s radar for months now but a decision date hasn’t been set as of now.
Stockrisers’ Jake Weingarten caught up with Walton on Saturday to break down his recruitment, including the teams that are recruiting him the hardest:
"In September/October, Walton took official visits to Arizona and North Carolina, two programs who remain involved. In addition, an unofficial to Creighton occurred around that time as well. With that, who’s still involved?“The schools that have still been recruiting me hard is Arizona, Creighton, Minnesota, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, and UNC.”"
This is good news for UNC, who is still in the race to land the talented guard. The Tar Heels have a need on the wing going into the 2020-21 season and would love to add another player to the mix if they can.
While there will be a quiet time for recruitment over the next month, we should know more about Walton’s recruitment after that.
