UNC Basketball: Garrison Brooks, Cole Anthony take home ACC honors
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program saw two members earn Atlantic Coast Conference honors on Monday afternoon as the tournament is set to begin
While it’s been a disappointing year in Chapel Hill for the North Carolina men’s basketball program, there has been one big bright spot.
The play of forward Garrison Brooks in his junior season at North Carolina has been fantastic and he’s emerged as not only one of the best players on his team but in the entire conference. Brooks finished the season averaging 16.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 53.6 percent from the field.
His uptick in production helped him earn Second-Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference Honors as well as the Most Improved Player, the league announced on Monday morning:
Brooks led the conference in scoring, finished second in rebounding and second in field goal percentage last season. Some pretty impressive stuff. So why was he named only to the Second-Team? Carolina’s losing record may have played a part in that.
Joining Brooks on the second-team for the conference is Mamadi Diakite (Virginia), Devin Vassell (Florida State), Trent Forrest (Florida State) and Markell Johnson (N.C. State). Brooks received 209 votes, which was third among second-team members.
Freshman Cole Anthony also was honored by the conference on Monday.
Despite missing a few weeks with a leg injury, Anthony was named to the All-ACC Third-Team as well as the All-Freshman Team. Anthony averaged 19.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game this year. Duke’s Vernon Carey Jr. was named the ACC Freshman of the Year beating Anthony out by 20 votes.
Joining Anthony on that All-Freshman team are: Carey Jr., (Duke), Landers Nolley II (Virginia Tech)
Cassius Stanley (Duke) and Patrick Williams (Florida State).
The Tar Heels will open up their 2020 ACC Tournament schedule on Tuesday as they take on Virginia Tech in the first round. UNC will need to win all five of their possible games to reach the NCAA Tournament.
