Former UNC basketball standout Coby White scores 26 points for second straight game

Former North Carolina standout and current Chicago Bulls point guard Coby White scored a game-high 26 points on Friday night, but his team lost 108-102 to the Indiana Pacers, their 12th defeat over the last 14 games.

Their misfortunes on the basketball court over that time period have had little to do with White, though, as the first-year player from Goldsboro, North Carolina has put together his best stretch of the season over the past month-plus. Over his last seven games, in particular, he’s been arguably the best rookie in the league. And although the Bulls have won just two of those seven games, White has notched point totals of 33, 33, 35, 22, 19, 26 and 26.

His latest offensive output came on a 10-for-21 shooting performance, and 3-for-10 from beyond the arc. He hit all three of his free throws, pulled down a pair of rebounds and dished out six assists — his third consecutive game with at least five. He also tied Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant for the most games (9) of 25 or more points this season from a rookie.

White is quickly becoming one of the Bulls’ most capable and consistent scorers, particularly with leading scorer Zach LaVine out of the lineup. And that’s all without starting a single game this season. He’s now averaging 13 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game while hitting nearly 40 percent of his shots from the floor, and 35.6 from three-point range.

White and the Bulls will be back on the court Sunday night when they travel east to take on Spencer Dinwiddie and the Brooklyn Nets.
