UNC Basketball: The 5 worst Duke losses of the Roy Williams era
By Carson Brown
February 8th, 2020: Duke 98 – UNC 96
This game compares to the last game mentioned all too well. Another late-game blunder led by a comeback from Tyus Jones’ younger brother, Tre.
The difference between the two is the fact that the last North Carolina team was extremely consistent and competitive, while this season’s team isn’t. The loss hurts regardless because of the rivalry, but it also stings because this season has been so cursed for the Tar Heels.
The amount of late-game collapses, and opposing team buzzer-beaters has been heartbreaking for this group. A win versus Duke would’ve done wonders for this team.
The Tar Heels led by 10 with 2:18 left in the second half, and managed to find a way to lose. Jones scored nine points in the last 50 seconds to force overtime, and eventually take down the Tar Heels.
A season loaded with disappointment and misfortune didn’t need a loss like that to Duke. Cole Anthony had just returned, and things felt special for the first time since the Oregon game, but the way this game ended seemingly crushed all hope for North Carolina.
