Former UNC basketball star keeps the hot hand for Chicago, scorching the Timberwolves for game-high 26 points

It took a little over half a season, but Chicago Bulls rookie point guard Coby White has evidently arrived. The former Tar Heel has been on an absolute tear in recent weeks, proving to be, perhaps, the hottest rookie in the league not named Zion Williamson. And even that’s debatable over the past half-dozen games.

White averaged better that 20 points per game in the month of February, including a three-game stretch that saw him score totals of 33, 33 and 35 off the Chicago bench. He’s scored 19 or more points in the three games since, including a 26-point performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night.

White hit 11-of-22 shots for the game, and 2-of-7 from three-point range. And to White’s credit, his shooting numbers were much better before the game’s closing minutes when it was desperation time for the Bulls. They didn’t come away with the win, but White’s offensive dominance was no less impressive because of it.

Perhaps the most encouraging thing that White did against the Wolves was dish out a team-high six assists to zero turnovers. It’s his second game in a row with at least five assists, and the fifth over his last 11. So, while White has been more of a score-first guard to begin his career with the Bulls, he appears to be honing his ability to set teammates up in good positions to score the basketball, too.

White and the Bulls will take the court again on Friday night when they face off with the Indiana Pacers at Chicago’s United Center. Check back with Keeping It Heel for continued coverage of Coby White’s rookie season, and everything UNC basketball.
