Former UNC basketball sharpshooter Cameron Johnson nets career-high in 123-114 loss to Toronto

Former Tar Heel sharpshooter and current Phoenix Suns rookie Cameron Johnson put up a career-high 21 points in a 123-114 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday night. The Suns weren’t able to come away with the victory, but Johnson was a difference-maker for the Suns as they built a seven-point first half lead over the second-place Raptors.

He hit 7-of-16 shots on the game, and 5-of-13 from three-point range to go along with four rebounds, two assists, a block and three steals. He took care of the basketball, too, committing just one turnover in 33 minutes of play off the Phoenix bench. What’s even better; Johnson’s career performance came on his birthday.

It’s Johnson’s 18th double-digit scoring game of the season, but just his fourth since the start of February. His seven field goals tied a career-best, and the five three-pointers that he hit were a season-high.

The Suns selected Johnson with the No. 11 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Despite widespread criticism surrounding the team’s decision to make Johnson a lottery pick, he’s been solid in his first professional season. He’s averaging eight points, 2.8 rebounds and one assist per game on the season, and playing just over 20 minutes per contest. He’s shooting just under 40 percent from three-point range for the season, which ranks 30th in the league and second among first-year players.

Johnson and the Suns will be back in action when they take on the Portland Trail Blazers in a Western Conference showdown on Friday night.
