Former UNC basketball sharpshooter Wayne Ellington scores 15 points off the bench in Knicks upset win over Rockets

Former Tar Heel and current New York Knicks shooting guard Wayne Ellington had one of his best games of the season on Monday night when he scored 15 points off the bench in a stunning 125-123 upset win over the Houston Rockets.

Ellington knocked down 5-of-8 shots for the game — all three-pointers — to go along with three rebounds, two assists and two blocks in just 19 minutes of play. Every one of those shots turned out to be a big one in a game that the Knicks led by 10 as they entered the fourth quarter. Despite a late run by James Harden and the Rockets, Ellington’s Knicks held on by two points to win their 19th game of the season.

For Ellington, it’s his fourth double-digit scoring game in the last seven, and third performance of 15 or more points over the last three weeks. He’s had a hot hand, too, shooting nearly 49 percent from beyond the arc since the start of February. And he’s connected on 36.1 percent of his threes for the season, his eleventh since leaving the University of North Carolina in 2009. He’s averaging 5.3 points, 1.6 rebounds and one assist per game as a reserve guard for the Knicks.

Ellington and the Knicks will be back in action on Wednesday night when they take on the Utah Jazz at Madison Square Garden.
