UNC Basketball in the NBA: Coby White named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month
By Zack Pearson
Former UNC Basketball standout Coby White received some big NBA honors on Tuesday afternoon following his impressive February stretch
While the buzz around NBA rookies currently surrounds Ja Morant and Zion Williamson, it’s a former North Carolina standout that is making headlines over the past few weeks.
Chicago Bulls point guard and former North Carolina star Coby White has been on a hot run over the past two weeks, putting up scoring performances of 33, 33, 35, 22 and 19. He set a new career-high with 33 points in the loss to Phoenix on Feb. 22nd and then upped that high two games later with a 35-point performance against Oklahoma City.
For his efforts, White picked up his first big award in his NBA career.
The league named White the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for February on Tuesday afternoon, a night after he led the Bulls to a upset win over Dallas with 19 points:
White averaged 20.1 points, 4.1 assists per game in the month of February and shot 41.1 percent from the three-point line. During his hot run, White also made some NBA history as well.
He became the first rookie in NBA history to score 30-plus points in three-straight games coming off the bench. White has found his role with the second unit on the Bulls and has yet to crack the starting rotation under Jim Boylen. It’s not expected that White starts anytime soon as Boylen noted that the young rookie has a “voice” with the second unit.
But if White continues his hot play, he could force Boylen’s hand.
