UNC Basketball: Cole Anthony earns ACC Freshman of the Week honors

UNC basketball point guard Cole Anthony earns ACC Freshman of the Week honors for performances against NC State and Syracuse.

North Carolina’s Cole Anthony has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Week after performances against NC State and Syracuse last week that helped the team win consecutive games for the first time since late November.

Anthony had 19 points, five rebounds and five assists against the Wolfpack on Tuesday. He hit 7-of-12 shots for the game, and played a team-high 37 minutes in the 85-79 victory. He followed that up with an even better game against the Orange on Saturday, scoring 25 points and dishing out seven assists, while knocking down a career-best seven three-pointers in a 92-79 UNC victory. For the week he was 15-of-25 from the floor, 8-of-15 from beyond the arc and 6-of-10 from the free throw line.

It’s Anthony’s second time winning the award, but first since the opening week of the season. That time, Anthony picked up the honor after a 34-point, 11-rebound game against Notre Dame, and a 20-point, 10-rebound performance at UNC-Wilmington.

Statistically speaking, Anthony has been one of the most dynamic freshmen in college basketball this season, despite widespread belief that he’s been a disappointment. He’s averaging 19.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. He’s had eight games with 20 or more points scored, and three games with at least 10 rebounds.
