UNC basketball earns its second consecutive win, topping Syracuse by double-digits at the Carrier Dome

Garrison Brooks had a game-high 26 points and 13 rebounds, as North Carolina beat Syracuse by a final score of 92-79 at the Carrier Dome on Saturday afternoon.

Brooks hit 9-of-13 shots for the game, and 8-of-8 from the free throw line. He also dished out four assists, and had two blocks in one of his best overall games of the season. UNC freshman point guard Cole Anthony scored 25 points thanks to an outstanding offensive performance that saw him shoot 8-for-13 from the floor, and 7-for-11 from beyond the arc. He added a game-high seven assists to just two turnovers to go along with two rebounds, two steals and a block.

Senior grad transfer Christian Keeling scored a season-high 18 points before leaving the game with an apparent leg injury late in the second half. Five other Tar Heels got into the scoring column against the Orange, including Leaky Black, who had eight points, six assists and five rebounds. North Carolina shot 52.4 percent for the game, and hit a season-high 11 three-pointers. They also knocked down 15-of-17 free throw attempts, won the rebounding battle by 10 and assisted on 25 of their 33 made buckets.

Syracuse was led by sophomore guard Buddy Boeheim, who scored a team-high 22 points on a 9-for-17 shooting performance, while junior forward Elijah Hughes scored 19 points on a difficult 5-for-16 game from the floor. Syracuse big man Bourama Sidibe added 17 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks for the Orange, who fall to 16-13 overall with the loss, and 9-9 in conference play. The defeat greatly hurts their shot at an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and similar to the Tar Heels, they’ll likely have to win the ACC Tournament to have a shot at the big dance.

The win improves the Tar Heels to 12-17 on the season, and 4-13 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. They have a date with Wake Forest on Tuesday night before their season finale against the Duke Blue Devils in Durham on March 7.
