Another tough weekend for the UNC basketball program sees the men’s and women’s teams lose in conference road games

Ivana Raca scored 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds, and Wake Forest beat North Carolina by a final score of 82-79 in overtime on Sunday afternoon.

Gina Conti added 17 points, seven assists and four rebounds in a team-high 44 minutes. She hit 5-of-8 shots from the floor, and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. Alexandria Scruggs scored 14 points, and Christina Morra had 12 points on a 6-for-9 shooting performance. Alex Sharp scored just eight points for the game, but hauled in a team-high 11 rebounds in 39 minutes.

The Demon Deacons shot an outstanding 52.5 percent for the game, but just 15.4 percent from three-point range. They also missed eight of their 24 free throw attempts, committed 21 fouls and 18 turnovers, and lost the rebounding battle by five. Despite it all, though, they managed to come up with enough big plays — including the game-tying three-pointer at the end of regulation — to come away with the win. Wake Forest improves to 14-14 on the season, and 7-10 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

North Carolina was led by Madinah Muhammad, who scored 21 points on a 10-for-26 shooting performance. Senior guard Taylor Koenen had a horrendous shooting game, going just 3-for-19 from the floor and 0-for-4 from long-range. She did hit 11-of-14 free throw attempts, though, and finished the game with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Shayla Bennett added 16 points in a game-high 45 minutes, while Malu Tshitenge scored a dozen.

The Tar Heels hit just 28 of their 80 shot attempts for the game, and had a 2-for-14 mark from beyond the arc. They assisted on just eight of their 28 made buckets, and several of their 14 turnovers came at crucial times that cost them opportunities to win the game. North Carolina falls to 16-11 on the season, and 7-9 in conference play. They’ll need to string together some wins down the stretch this season to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament’s field of 68.

The Tar Heels will be back on the court on Thursday night when they travel to South Bend, Indiana to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
