National recruiting analyst says there’s no chance that UNC basketball freshman point guard Cole Anthony returns to Chapel Hill next season.

Despite recent claims from Cole Anthony’s father, Greg, that the sensational freshman point guard could return to North Carolina next season, national recruiting analyst Evan Daniels says there is absolutely no chance that happens.

When asked on Twitter this week about what North Carolina would do with its rotation and incoming freshmen if Anthony decided to return in the fall, Daniels quickly shot the notion down. He stated that it “doesn’t matter, because, quite simply, there’s no way that Anthony doesn’t put his name in June’s NBA Draft.

"“The truth is it doesn’t matter if they could mesh because the chances of Cole Anthony returning to North Carolina are 0.0%,” Daniels writes. “Anthony is gone. He’s going to be a lottery pick. His plan from the jump was to be a one-and-done player and that’s exactly what is going to happen. That said, UNC’s backcourt is in good shape. Caleb Love is one of my favorite point guard prospects in the 2020 class and R.J. Davis is going to be a terrific college guard because of his shot making, change of pace and confidence. Those two complement each other well.”"

And let’s be honest, there is no chance that Anthony returns to North Carolina for a sophomore season. It’s a mere miracle and nod to Anthony’s character that he even returned to the lineup this year after recovering from surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus. It’s not like North Carolina was competing for a conference title, or even a bid to the NCAA Tournament. They weren’t, and they’re not. But Anthony’s love for the game and respect his teammates brought him back to the hardwood to finish out his freshman season.

Through 15 games, Anthony is averaging 19.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists. He’s recorded 20 or more points in seven games this season, as well as three double-digit rebound performances. Anthony and the Tar Heels are just 10-16 on the season, with a matchup with Louisville set for Saturday afternoon.
