UNC baseball remains undefeated, as Tar Heels put up 14 runs against formerly unbeaten High Point

Mikey Madej went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two runs batted in, and North Carolina beat High Point by a final score of 14-0 at Boshamer Stadium on Wednesday.

Madej’s three hits against the Panthers led North Carolina, and he was one of four Tar Heels to score an extra base hit on the day. He had two doubles, while Dallas Tessar and Angel Zarate each had one, and sophomore preseason All-American Aaron Sabato got his first home run of the season. Freshman catcher Will Stewart went 2-for-2 with a run and three RBIs, and senior center fielder Dylan Harris extended his hit streak to five games. He went 1-for-3 with three runs scored, and now leads the team with seven base hits on the season.

The Tar Heels scored 14 runs despite leaving 10 runners on base. They notched a dozen hits on the day, and took nine bases on balls. Four Tar Heel pitchers combined to give up four hits, and strike out eight batters. They gave up just two walks, and three UNC relievers pitched five innings of no-hit baseball.

Five of seven High Point pitchers gave up at least one run on Wednesday. Starter Dawson Place and reliever Jimmy Curley both gave up four runs in a combined three and two-thirds innings. Four Panthers had one hit a piece, but they couldn’t muster anywhere near enough offense to compete with the Tar Heels in their non-conference matchup. They did come close to plating runs a couple of times — including a close play at home plate that saw Zarate throw a laser from left field to nail the runner at home plate — but couldn’t get big hits at key times, and left five men on the base path.
