Will former UNC Football quarterback Marquise Williams get his shot to start for the New York Guardians in the XFL soon enough?

Former North Carolina standout Marquise Williams ins one of a few Tar Heels currently on a roster for the new XFL league that is in its second week of the re-birth. Williams is a member of the New York Guardians and opened the year as the backup to former Penn State and NFL quarterback Matt McGloin.

Through the first two games of the year, Williams has primarily served as the backup to McGloin and has spent time on the punt coverage team. But is that set to change soon?

During Saturday’s 27-0 loss to the DC Defenders, McGloin and the Guardians offense really struggled to move the football. They suffered the first shutout in XFL history and during halftime, McGloin didn’t hold back on his coaching staff and teammates.

Listen to what McGloin said to ESPN’s Dianna Russini:

Oof.

Following the game, Guardians coach Kevin Gilbride said he needs to talk to McGloin about the comments. Now, the XFL is supposed to be edgy and different from the NFL but this was some incredible content.

It also led to Williams getting some more playing time in the second half and reps at the quarterback position. The quarterback even had this play on special teams that allowed New York to convert on a fourth down:

Williams completed 4 of his 8 passing attempts for 51 yards and didn’t far much better than McGloin.

However, with Gilbride apparently not happy there is a chance that Williams can see more time as the starting quarterback for the Guardians. That will be something to monitor over the weeks in the XFL.
