Boston Celtics standout Jaylen Brown talks about how he almost committed to the UNC Basketball program and his respect for Roy Williams

You often hear about the relationships that players have with their head coaches at the high school, college and pro levels of basketball.

Heck, just a few months ago Roy Williams flew to Chicago to watch Coby White have a breakout game and then praise his former coach during a post game interview. It was one of the coolest moments all year long for UNC fans as you can see just how much White truly appreciated what Williams has done for him.

But it’s not often you see a player who never played for a coach, praise him.

That’s happened twice this week to Williams as Duke standout Vernon Carey Jr. took the time to go over and shake Roy’s hand after fouling out in Saturday’s game. After that, a mini series on Bleacher Report hosted by Taylor Rooks featured Boston Celtics standout Jaylen Brown as he talked about life, basketball and much more.

One of the more interesting parts of the segment was Brown talking about his college decision and why he picked Cal over North Carolina. Brown revealed just how close he was to going to UNC and how much he adores Williams.

“I was very close to going to UNC,” Brown told Rooks. “To this day, I love and absolutely adore Coach Roy. Cause UNC growing up, my mom will tell you, I was the biggest UNC fan. I had all of the memorabilia. I had all the MJ, everything. When Roy came on the visit he brought like Jordan’s rings. He did the whole thing. It was hard for me not to go.”

Brown eventually picked Cal over the Tar Heels as a five-star recruit in the 2015 recruiting class that saw UNC land Luke Maye and Kenny Williams. If he had committed to UNC, Brown would have been a freshman on the 2015-16 team that lost to Villanova on a heart-breaking buzzer beater from Kris Jenkins. What could have been if Brown would have picked North Carolina….
